Is Linux feasible for use in data recovery?

Lately there has been a great amount of discussion citing Linux as useful data recovery tool. I am a great fan of Linux and I can tell you that it is worth its weight in gold if for noting else than its entertainment value. But as a substitute for data recovery software it is unsuitable. Actually the best use for small live CD Linux applications is for super speedy web browsing. But we will save that discussion for another day. Today’s topic is data recovery programs as opposed to Linux applications.
