Personal Storage Folder is one of the file format supported by Microsoft outlook. It is basically used   to store mails, contacts, calendar etc

Generally these PST files are saved under .PST extension and their   size is limited to 2GB, if it exceeds 2GB size limit it  may lead data loss.

Some of the other reasons for data loss are:

• When you accidentally delete your mails and contacts
• Header getting corrupted
• Corruption of mails due to compression
• Virus attack
• Sudden shutdown of the system
• When a file is shared over  a network
• When the file size exceeds the limits of 2GB.

A  pst recovery software must restore back the deleted mails, contacts, events, schedule, notes etc  back safely without  modifying  the original content.

Microsoft provides a   pst repair utility called Outlook  Inbox Repair tool to repair the corrupted PST files. Outlook Inbox Repair tool first reads the damaged files and restores them safely, after recovering it may save the emails as .eml files. It can also restore password protected files.
